Are discount laptops all they're cracked up to be? Some of us tend to apply the 'used car' model to discount laptops - you know, the type of thinking that says that if it seems too good to be true, it probably is! So we might get suspicious if we see laptops for sale at what might seem to be incredible prices.

But is caution warranted in this case? It may not be. For a start, keep in mind the fact that technology is changing very rapidly, so 'older' models and technologies (often not very old at all!) are going to seem cheap - certainly cheaper than they were a year or two ago. So, taking that into account, discount laptops may not really be as cheap as it seems. Just a few years ago, finding a laptop for under $ 2000 was unthinkable - but now, there are many good 'discount' models for half this figure or less.

Second, consider what makes a laptop discount, and decide whether that matters to you. It may not. A discount laptop may be a slightly older model, but still perfectly serviceable. Remember, with most models, you can update it and add more memory at a later date if you choose. Another reason why a laptop may be discounted is that it may come from a lesser known company, or it may be used or refurbished. Again, none of these factors should be an immediate reason for concern. Depending on your needs, discount laptops can serve you just as well as top-of-the-line models.
