Consider a Laptop Cooler for Your Older Model Laptop
If you have a laptop that gets a lot of use - it's on for hours at a time, and used to play CDs and DVDs - you might consider investing in a laptop cooler. That's because laptops, especially older models, can get extremely hot under those conditions. This is especially true of older model laptops, which often have less efficient internal cooling systems. Not everyone needs a laptop cooler, but if your laptop often gets uncomfortably hot, consider investing in one of these handy contraptions.
The problem is this - if your laptop has to work hard (as it does when playing a DVD) and there isn't enough space underneath to allow airflow, it may overheat. Over time, this can be detrimental to the machine. A laptop cooler is a slanted aluminum stand (ergonimically correct - a bonus!) that the laptop sits on top of, on a desk or any other flat surface. The cooler plugs into a wall outlet, and two fans, along with a structure that allows airflow to the bottom of the computer, keep it significantly cooler.
You may or may not need a laptop cooler. As mentioned before, it all depends on how much you use your laptop, and how hot you observe that it gets. Whether or not you decide you need a cooler, though, here's one thing to remember - despite the name, your lap is not the best place to put a laptop, at least not for long periods of time. You want to have your computer on a surface that allows airflow to the bottom of the machine to allow it to cool.
