Types of Laptop Power Supply
Laptop power supply seems a simple matter - the laptop runs on either a battery or an electrical power source. It is not quite like other electronics around your home, though, in that most laptops need DC or 'direct current' electricity. By contrast, electrical outlets in your home or office supply AC or 'alternating current'. The 'power brick' that is a component of your laptop power supply cord is actually a DC adaptor, converting alternating current into the direct current your laptop needs.
At the same time, the power cord also acts as a charger, similar to a cell phone charger - it powers up your laptop battery on an ongoing basis. Laptop power supply is somewhat adaptable, therefore, making laptops portable - at least for a few hours at a time, that is. The newer models often have a battery that holds a charge for longer - five to seven hours, in some cases. Adding an additional laptop power supply - an external battery - can increase the time that you can spend away from an electric power source.
Some people recommend removing your laptop battery when you're at home or in the office, so that your laptop power supply source bypasses the battery when possible. In this way, they argue, the battery (if stored carefully) will last longer. For most of us, though, this isn't very practical advice, because the whole appeal of laptops is their portability. Constantly putting the battery in and out may damage the contact points over time, and this might even end up being a more serious problem than the routine replacement of a battery.
