Laptop RAM refers to memory - how much memory or power your computer has. Because laptops are used in so many different capacities nowadays, it's a good idea to know how much laptop RAM you need now, and to estimate how much you are likely to need in the future. That's because the size of the laptop's RAM may, in part, determine the price. Furthermore, while most laptops are upgradeable - that is, more memory can be added as needed - some basic models are not. Also, some computers have a maximum memory, and you need to correctly gauge whether this maximum figure is appropriate for your needs.
 
It largely depends what you will be using your laptop for. For example, the minimum RAM needed to boot a laptop is usually about 128 MB, and if you are using the computer only for word processing, it's just a little more - usually in the 200's. Most of us, however, use the internet - and if you're running on too little memory, you may find it slow going. If you use a lot of graphics or play a lot of games, your laptop RAM needs will be higher - up to 512 MB, which is the maximum memory for some current laptop models. SO, if you use your computer primarily for gaming and wish to hang onto it for some time, don't choose a laptop with a 512 MB maximum memory! As time goes on, games and graphics become more complex, and you will probably want to upgrade at some point.
 
Here's an additional complication: even if your laptop RAM used to be sufficient, and you aren't using it in a new way, you may still find that you need to upgrade the memory at some point. If you find that your computer is running more slowly than in used to, try defragmentation, but consider the possibility that the RAM you have may no longer be enough.
