The Importance of Laptop Security

Laptop security falls into two main categories. First, the computer itself needs to be protected from theft. Then, valuable data on the computer also needs to be protected. A variety of solutions exist with regard to both concerns. First, to protect your computer, your most valuable tool is your own vigilance. Never leave your laptop unattended in a public place, even for a moment. If it's unavoidable, though, there are cable locks available for laptop computers. They can tether the laptop to a desk or table leg, for example, and some are equipped with an alarm that sounds if the lock is tampered with. Another excellent precaution is to put an asset tag on your computer, or engrave an identification number. That way, in case it is stolen, at least you have a better chance of getting it back. Finally, there are trailing devices that allow the computer to 'call home' or the police if stolen. You can activate the device remotely one you realize the laptop is missing.

Laptop security also extends to valuable data on your computer. The best precaution is to use a secure operating system with a secure logon. Change your password frequently, and don't make it too obvious. There are also programs which allow you to encrypt you most valuable or private data.
