Or, if you desire, the computer can also save notes or diagrams in handwritten or hand-drawn form. That way, you can personalize documents or write and email handwritten messages to friends. You can take notes in class, and either save them in that form or convert them to text later on.

It's easy to see why you would want a tablet PC, but who really needs one? They are undeniably useful to students, for a start, but also to anyone who needs to take notes while interacting with others - think counselors, lawyers, or reporters, to name just a few. Taking notes on a standard laptop in the presence of others puts a barrier between you and them; tablet PCs, on the other hand, are no more obtrusive than a pad of paper. One word or warning, however - this relatively new technology is very likely to improve in the next few years, so if you invest in a convertible laptop now, pay particular attention to upgradeability.
